Urban Context

Credentials

"The New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building has some of the most photographed interiors in the world, so finding images that stand out from the crowd is not easy. Rob, however, not only excelled in capturing the atmosphere of the building in a series of powerful images...he is a pleasure to work with.”  --  Lis PearsonNew York Public Library

Bastiaan Jongerius , owner of Bastiaan Jongerius Architects : "Rob van Esch captured the story behind the design of Cheese Factory "De Tijd" in pictures. Crucial in the design is a spatial geometric construction of the colonnade with a transparent façade in an open landscape of the Beemster, a mathematical, geometric land division from the time of the Renaissance. By capturing the building right on his vertex with two perspective vanishing points on the horizon on either side, the image reflects the geometry of the building. By doing so at dusk, the wall is transparent and therefore the cheese factory is firmly connected to the landscape. The Beemster Cheese is literally connected to the region where the product comes from. The intention of the design is perfectly portrayed, nailed on the head. "

Wilhelmien Hoekstra, marketing manager at the Tropenmuseum: "The eye catcher of the Tropen Museum is the monumental Light Hall, which has been updated recently. This large space is beautifully portrayed by Rob van Esch! Not surprising that this images has attracted lots of media attention in the press coverage of the new museum. Rob actively participates with the client and understands what the customer has in mind. A good partnership. "

Anna Valentini of the Van Nelle Factory, "The Van Nelle Factory is an icon in the Dutch architecture, this is recognized worldwide with the addition to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The building is particularly photogenic, but Rob has made series of photos which precisely captures the harmony between the various buildings. Looking at his images where he puts together the machine room and the other buildings, the time seems frozen. I can feel the atmosphere of the building, looking at the pictures. I was not surprised that the Financieele Dagblad has published the series. "

Ernst Havermans of Oomen / Havermans / Van Sambeek Architects BV: "Rob has shown before that he can capture spaces very creatively, but in doing so he also has a sharp eye for detail. A surprising combination! "

"The Tijdstroom publisher holds office in a unique location, the John's Church in Utrecht. With the photo series of Ruimtes in Beeld we now also have unique photos. Rob van Esch has lived up to its name: our unique location is captured as never before!" Martijn Kole, owner/publisher Martijn Kole, owner/publisher.

Ton Harmes, CEO and co-owner of bookshop Dominicanen in Maastricht: "The combination of a seven centuries old gothic church which houses a modern bookstore is unique. It must be one of the most photogenic bookshops in the world. Despite this, Rob has been able to produce a unique series of images. The way he has captured the light, in combination with the perfectly balanced colors, is really an achievement!”

"Rob van Esch has made with Ruimtes in Beeld pictures of our monumental building in Breda. That worked out fantastic. He feels like no other the atmosphere of a business and knows to connect his photography seamlessly to that. An expert par excellence. "- Hans Dubbeldam Director Index Capital Vermogensbeheer

VISION ON ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY

VISION ON ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Accumulating art and art

As architectural photographer, I want my images to be a tribute to the creation of the architect or the building (interior or exterior) that an owner wants to present nicely. If they think with pride "WOW, have it made this !?", then my mission is accomplished. I'm trying to achieve synergy by accumulating my art on their art. Through my experience in areas other than photography, I can additionally advise clients on how to leverage the power of images and extract maximum efficiency from the presentation.

Light, lines and contrasts

I try to create images that surprise, that show what not everybody immediately sees. Images, in which the lines have their function, whether it is to determine the structure of the image or show the viewer the way to the main topic. Images from which the light shines to you, and in which contrasts help to show what is really important. I want to create an atmosphere in my images that matches the subject. Photos need life. That's why I like to add dynamics to buildings by recording in their context.

Photos can stand the test of time

I almost always work with the existing light, which makes my images authentic. I am patient, and wake up early enough to find the best light. By taking time to make a picture, and a thorough post-production of my raw material, I hope that the photos I produce can stand the test of time.

From big to small

I love huge spaces and symmetry is certainly well spent to me. At the same time I'd like to keep an eye for detail. To provide the customer creative surprises is an important way to distinguish yourself.

Career Switch

Since early 2015 I have been working as a professional photographer under the label "Ruimtes in Beeld". Before that I was doing very different things. I worked for fifteen years at the central government, including as an Adviser to the Prime Minister, with Unilever and until 2015 as Managing Director of NLkabel, the association of cable companies (like Ziggo). Over ten years ago, when I first got hold of a digital camera, the photography virus hit and I have acquired the skills necessary to make good images. In early 2015 I made a career switch. No politics and management anymore, but I now only do things that make my heart beat faster: create beautiful images to help my clients to distinguish themselves.

Work in commissions and with agencies Hollandse Hoogte and Offset

I work on commission, but also for photo agencies. My work is to represented by Offset ("a new, curated collection of extraordinary, engaging imagery from top artists and storytellers around the world") and Hollandse Hoogte, "a full-service photo agency that represents both Dutch photographers and prestigious international agencies." Until now only about ten Dutch photographers were allowed to contribute to Offset, and I was the first Dutch architecture photographer attached to this agency..

Way of working

During an informal interview, all the wishes of the client discussed. I will draft a proposal. The Terms and Conditions clearly establish how the images may be used. Basically, you can use them without any hassle, due to clear price agreements and clarity about copyrights. The photos are delivered in all desired formats: they can (very large) printed or WeTransferred or are tailor made for the website. Do you like to learn more about my photography? Rob van Esch is a member of join DuPho, the Dutch association for professional photographers.
